In France, a ZPPAUP was a system established by the decentralization law of January 7, 1983, the scope of which was extended by the “landscapes” law of January 8, 1993, and which since February 24, 2004 constituted article L. 642 of the Heritage Code.

Its objective was to ensure the protection of landscaped and urban heritage and to highlight districts and sites to be protected for aesthetic or historical reasons by expressing the ambition to improve the notion of field of visibility ("perimeter"). of 500 m” around a historic monument) by replacing it with an “intelligent perimeter”.

The law relating to freedom of creation, architecture and heritage of July 7, 2016 replaces them with remarkable heritage sites (SPR), which also replace AVAPs and protected sectors.

These SPR retain the same protection objective as the ZZPAUP.
